Contextual QR Codes

1) “Contextual QR Codes”: (Rouillard)

This paper examines the potential of QR Codes as “context-aware features” (Rouillard, 54). As a context-aware feature, a QR code would essentially be able to personalize information. Currently QR codes “capture and distribute” the same information to everyone (Rouillard, 54). For instance, a QR code might lead someone to a website, a YouTube video, or a Facebook page, but with a “fusion between a public part of information (QR Code) and a private part of information (the context) provided by the device that scanned the code” a message could provide specific information, depending on the context. This information includes, but is not limited to a user’s name, the time and date and location (Rouillard, 52). This paper will contribute to our topic by helping us to understand the future and potential uses of this technology. Will the future of QR codes be based on contextual information? If so what are the implications? What are the benefits? This ties into privacy concerns. How much private (or personal) information will this technology detect? Contextual QR codes will help us to examine the possible privacy issues that could develop with this feature.
